the Book of Meditations (2024)
Where "The Book of Cannibals" examined the ways we consume and transform influence through art and style, Norberto Gomez Jr.'s "The Book of Meditations" turns inward to chronicle an intimate spiritual and artistic journey across three American landscapes - West Virginia's Gateless Meditation Center, Austin's Zen Center, and moments of solitude in Baltimore. A decade later, they explore the territories of loss, longing, and transformation through both word and image.
Through typewritten entries and stark black-and-white illustrations, the text weaves between zen practice, quantum physics, and raw emotional terrain. "In my darkest times, the ones so hard to explain, but where I am the most frightened, lost, meaningless, and falling, falling eaten up by some black worm of why does it all matter anyway-ness or am I going to make it out of this alive-ness," speaks to the heart of this deeply personal work that moves far beyond their previous theoretical explorations.
Their distinctive ink drawings - featuring recurring motifs of many-eyed figures, dissociating forms, and grasping hands - create a visual dialogue that deepens the meditative experience. Unlike the theoretical stance of their previous work, these images and writings emerge from direct encounters with loss, presence, and the mystery of consciousness itself.
This limited edition of hardbound books, published by Sybil Press in 2024, was screen printed and bound by book artist Jillian Gomez. The striking red covers and carefully sewn signatures with pink thread create an intimate art object that matches the vulnerability of its contents.
