Pocho Blues (2021)

$12.00

Set on fútbol fields, parking lots, and dance floors, Guzmán’s collection of stories provides a window into the universe of pochos making their way in the world. Mundane objects and ordinary individuals fill these pages. A belt buckle connects a father and son, even after death. A coach names his youth team Zapata and places the Mexican revolutionary’s face on their jerseys. A taxi driver named Lobo joins his nephews for a cascarita against a group of paisas.

A proud alum of Garey High School and Mt. San Antonio Community College, Romeo Guzmán is an assistant professor in history at Claremont Graduate University. He is the co-director of the South El Monte Arts Posse and co-editor of East of East: The Making of Greater El Monte. You can find him chasing the ball around in the SGV and learn more about his research, writing, and public history at http://www.romeoguzman.com.
